The Sniffly & the Damn Fine Soap

Sure, it's lazy to combine posts for The Bold & the Beautiful and General Hospital, and half pointless anyway because I'm not sure there's all that many folks who are viewers of both. But they were both so lovely and moving today that it only seemed fair to combine the praise. Look, it doesn't happen often, so let's make it a special occasion.

But because this is Serial Drama and because I am who I am, let's get a few things out of the way first.

Don't show us flashbacks of Steffy's wedding look if you want us to be sympathetic to her.

Steffydress

She just looks so threatening in that ensemble, advancing toward him. Let's just leave it in the past!

And I want to preface this next one by explaining that I AM NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS:

Halfnekkidtodd

In fact, I welcome this. What I do not care for is how utterly un-Todd it is for him to be all, "Oh, let me pose and show off my half-naked hot bod." That's not Todd, that's never been Todd. That's some traditional soap hunk who we never watched graphically gang-rape a gagged and restrained woman. There are about a million ways to show off what Roger Howarth's got under there, but it does not make sense to include "because he knows he's ripped" as one of them. Todd has been an acceptable anti-hero because he is the opposite of that. Don't let him act like a damn Ford! Let him be Todd and, I mean come on, we know Carlivati and Valentini can come up with other reasons to show the candy.

Now about the priest who's slated to preside over Liam and Hope's "wedding" (I have to put that in quotes because I'm assuming it won't actually go through and they'll just have Ridge and Brooke get married instead) (Unspoiled here, just a suspicion!)...

Hotpadre

I just worry for him, will he get out of whatever drama unfolds in time to make his nighttime gig as a Chippendales dancer?

Also, I say NO:

Postcoituslukeandanna

First of all, Anna woke up and Luke was literally just sitting there, in a bathrobe. Watching her sleep. And had apparently laid out her bra really nicely for her on the bed. That's not sweet, it's creepy. Second of all, I adore the idea of the over-fifty crowd getting a love triangle BUT IT SHOULD NOT INVOLVE ANNA AND LUKE. Nope, not those two. I just can't do it. I can't watch Tracy get humiliated (and lash out) over and over, and I can't watch Luke and Anna all smoochy. They are great in scenes togther as friends. Full stop. Beyond that? Heebie-jeebies. I just cannot get on board.

Now let's get to the good stuff.

There's been a major shift the last few weeks in the way Jacqueline MacInnes Wood has been approaching the way Steffy is dealing with "losing Liam" (obviously in quotes because I don't believe it's anywhere near a done deal). Where she used to kind of play the subtext of, "Damn! I can't be losing! And not to a Logan!" she is now playing a real, heartbroken human being.

Sadsteffy

She just looks like a hurt little girl. Giving her some real vulnerability has done wonders to humanize her. (I am NOT SAYING this storyline has gotten good! End it!)

And the Davis girls!

Davisgirls

I love them so much when they're loving each other! It's time to close the ranks and circle the wagons and all that good stuff (and we blissfully didn't have to deal with Kristina being heinous and inviting her fake reality show along for, you know, her nephew's funeral).

We also got Spinelli doing actual private investigating instead of standing around being a pathetic jackass about Maxie, and he even found some clues!

Spinellisleuthing

Of course, why the sheriff's department was so quick to just offer up information on private citizens to a random dude crawling around on the road is beyond me, but no matter! If it keeps him active and un-annoying, I'm all for it. Just as I was all for his kind REAL BOY words to offer Sam support after the funeral (though why did only Davis girls go to the funeral while everyone else just swung by post-burial?).

And over in Italy, Hope saw her biological father Deacon for the first time in.... well, how ever many SORAS years it's been since Hope was a toddler. Thereabouts?

Hope: This -- this is just really... really unbelievable. I haven't seen you since I was--

Deacon: I know.

Hope: Really little. And... now all of a sudden, you're here.

Deacon: It's not every day a girl gets married.

Hope: Yeah, how did you know?

Deacon: Well, um... even though I haven't been around, I've, uh, been trying to keep track of you, and, uh --

Hope: Really?

Deacon: Yeah.

Hope: Oh, gosh. I'm sorry. I just, um.. I feel like I have so many questions right now.

Hopeseesdeacon

Deacon: I want to answer every single one of them for you as -- just as long as you don't tell me to get lost.

At which point Sean Kanan's manly-man tears pretty much broke me.

Deacon

Hope: No. No. No. No. You have no idea... how much I wanted you here today... how much I need... Dad!

Deaconhopehug

Um, am I feeling genuine big emotions in response to a scene on The Bold & the Beautiful? I... I think I am, y'all. (So clearly, they should just go ahead and scoot Deacon right back off the canvas because, you know, who needs decades worth of history offering up some great drama?)

Meanwhile, back in Port Charles, other crazy things were happening. Todd was showing some serious guilt, and Carly noticed it (plot movement?). Jason admitted wrong-doing (what?!).

And more Davis girls love!

Moredavisgirls

It's ridiculous how much I dislike at least one of these gals most of the time but how much my heart is just full when they're a family. DAVIS GIRLS 4EVAH!

And then Carly had to go and show up and be so human and compassionate!

Carlyhug

Laura Wright really slays me in these moments. There's something about her that's just so damn maternal to anyone and everyone in Carly's (rare) major moments of humanity.

Samcarlyhug

I want her to hug me!

And then of course, Heather was being Heather.

Schemeyheather

She wants to work for Todd! She's totally going to blackmail him into being a Sun reporter, right? HEATHER AND TODD. I LOVE IT. (Reminiscent of Gabrielle blackmailing Todd into the same thing under oddly similar circumstances a decade ago, and I for one am thrilled at the callback.) And really, any chance they give Heather to say, "Call me crazy..." is a good one.

Oh and one last thing...

Annainasheet

Who just gets to be that freakin' hot? I ask you!

It was a good day in soap land.

Comments

Just like you, Louise, as soon as Heather started talking about getting a job at the Sun, I was all, "Oooh, Heather's gonna use what she knows about the baby switch to get a job at the Sun just like Gabrielle did re: the DBL! Which means lots of Todd and Heather together! Yay!"

I also loved how, when Carly first crept into the cemetery or whatever, everyone else kinda gave each other the side eye all, "Ooooh...what is this crazy bitch gonna dooo...".

@Louise: Good job on marrying the recaps.

I saw the Hope/Deacon scene on B&B and it was quite good. I think Kimberly Matula is a real talent and she really nailed her scenes as Hope with Brooke/Ridge and then the reunion with Deacon. I am actually interested in seeing what happens tomorrow. I suspect that Deacon will not go through with his bargain with $Bill but Hope/Liam will still not marry.

GH: Much of it was par for the course...so blech. I meant "bleach"...as in please bleach my eyes for I saw Anna slumming with Luke. Tracy being a fool not piecing together that sex was had in the room she was standing in and on the very bed she was siting on. EWWWW!!!!! Glad to see these actors onscreen just not in this story. Ummm, does Tracy and Anna know Mac is quite single?

Was that Spinelli sniffing/crawling on the wet road like a bassett hound? Actively annoying.

And as much as I LOVE seeing a shirtless Todd Manning, I couldn't agree more with your assessment of how Todd is characterized these days with his behavior toward Carly. As consolation, he was shirtless and magnificent. I am not that mad and I think Roger Howarth and Laura Wright have lots of chemistry. Since I am not getting Todd/Blair, I'll take Todd/Carly for a little while.

Laura Wright is waaaayyyy better at playing Carly Jax just like Cassie Layne Winslow Winslow Lewis from Guiding Light. Only GL viewers may get the reference. ;-)

I am a little off-put by Todd's behavior too, but I guess if you really want you can justify it by saying that he recognizes a kindred spirit to Blair in Carly and is subconsciously reacting accordingly.

And at least Spinelli did show the cop his PI license, so it wasn't completely out of left field. I was just dismayed at how I was actually...not minding a scene with Spinelli at the center! That alone is a big change from the old regime.

I agree KM did a nice job acting today, but as I've floated in and out of B&B (pre dvr), I've always thought Hope had a pretty damn good life with Ridge as her dad. He as far as I know treated her like blood, sometimes to the detriment of his kids with Taylor. So the whole "oh my God, you're HERE!" to Deacon is a little puzzling to me. Ridge didn't abuse, ignore, or try to make out with her ...that I know of. I'm not a big RM fan, but I felt his hurt when she refused his last attempt to walk her down the aisle. ....and a totally shallow note, what in the Hell was with Brooke 's dress and hair?

You know, Louise, I really didn't have a problem with shirtless Todd. I mean, besides in a "look at those abs!" kind of way. I took it as teasing Carly to make her uncomfortable, which is TOTALLY something Todd would do. It didn't feel sexual to me.

I have to say, I didn't hate the Luke/Anna/Tracy scenes. As much as I don't want Luke and Anna as a couple, I think I'm still just taken in by the novelty of there not being Wacky Old People Hijinks, complete with music. They're taking it seriously, which I really like.

I don't much like the Luke and Anna bit, but if they make it a true, legitimate triangle and not Luke making a fool of Tracy, I can accept it. And if Robert comes back and makes it a quadrangle, SCORE. Because for me, it will always be Robert and Anna 4EVA!!

slappie jones, I definitely know what you mean. Hope kept saying she wouldn't let Ridge walk her down the aisle because "he can't support this marriage." Isn't that exactly what he's doing? Supporting the marriage? It makes no sense. I definitely understand the significance of her bio-dad showing up, but her stand-off-ishness toward Ridge lately has been off-kilter.

Shirtless Todd (yummm) is always a good thing (imo) though it was totally out of character for him to be posing for Carly. . .reign that in rc/fv.

However the pretty was SOOOO very pretty it was tough for me to get totally worked up or even slightly worked up about it. . .the out of character stuff that is. I might've been worked up in other ways;)

I think part of what makes Laura Wright so maternal is she's taller than half the cast, heh.

Louise: I think under the circumstances, Ridge is doing a pretty good job 'walking the fence' between Steffy and Hope, trying to be there for both of his daughters. Of course thats not easy with all the 'destiny' and 'true love' bombs being thrown at him by his wife. Gah. In my dream storyline, Ridge and Brooke would get into a huge screaming match over the girls during which Ridge would call her a 'whore who slept with her son-in-law and got knocked up!!!' I love the site, Louise...keep up the great work!

Just when I thought I couldn't like this new character Todd any more than I already do- he goes & does THAT! Hello Todd! I did not know him from OLTL, so I can't judge whether it's in his character to be all shirtless & hot....all I know is that I liked it! I think that man would have chemistry with a lamp. Also, Laura Wright killed me when Carly hugged Sam. The Spinelli/Sam scene was also so sincere....I was choked up by both of them. I gotta admit I'm not loving Luke & Anna either. I just don't get Luke as a romantic interest....I obviously didn't see the Luke/Laura years cause apparently he had it going on then. I just gotta say that it's so uncomfortable watching them kiss....it's just hard to believe it when it looks as though he'd rather be kissing a toad. I know they're actors - & he's a phenomenal actor, but please put more "acting" into the love scenes. It reminds me of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Ew - painful kissing scenes). Anna is so super hot that she needs a sexy man. Finally, Kristina is NOT growing on me.....I do not like her snarly looks & I didn't like her in the graveside scenes either...she's just not likable to me. Please won't somebody scrap this awful Reality Show storyline??

The shirtless isn't the problem with many I think. . .in fact I'm pretty sure most would say "more shirtless Todd please!" . . . it's the posing before Carly opens the door that's the problem. That is so NOT TODD.

Todd was faithful to Blair for all these years (sleeping with only one other woman . .Tea . . once . . . and then running back to Blair. . . well floating and/or sailing).

That's pretty remarkable in soapland . . a hot man. . . "with" only one woman for over 18 years. I wonder if that's ever been repeated on any other soap story?

That just doesn't seem to fit with the Todd we saw yesterday.

Ahhh.....I see bethie, thanks for the explanation!
As a non OLTL'er I didn't know Todd's background.
Must be something in the water in Port Charles maybe. Still, for those of us who don't know Todd - it was a fun scene! The tricky part of the OLTL'ers coming to PC is that some GH fans don't have a background so we take them at face value. And I'm also a Johnny/Carly fan, so I'm not rooting for a Todd/Carly pairing.....but I stand by my earlier comments...the man would have chemistry with a lamp!
On another note, I agree....I'm trying to think of any other hot front burner soap guy only with 2 women over 18 years...I'm coming up blank.

I thought Todd flexing his abs at Carly was to show her that he's in just as good of shape as Johnny.

Anna can do some much better than old sleazy Luke.

I think Todd's awkward attempts to "pose" for Carly actually sold the scene and were true to character. He WANTS to flirt with Carly, but like a gawky teenager he's not exactly sure how to go about things. And given his history, that makes sense.

I enjoyed the references to "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones. Yes, Todd. You're a man of wealth and taste. It's too bad he's doomed to effing things up when he tries to right wrongs with another wrong.

But that's part of what makes Todd Manning interesting. He's flawed. He knows it. Unlike Jason who is flawed, can't come to grips with it, and has Carly & Michael telling him he's never done anything wrong.

But why does he want to flirt with Carly? Does he like her? Because that sucks. Blair's coming back to watch him hook up with Carly?

I wanted to add that today I loved the Heather and Todd stuff. The look on Todd's face when Heather said "call me crazy". . .and then suggesting that she write for the funny papers, the obituaries or the gardening section.

Also loved that he was once again true Todd. . .totally blaming his bad deeds on Heather (while knowing inside that it's totally going to bite him on his very fine ass).

I want him to gather up all the secrets, in a very Toddian way, of all the citizens of PC and when things get too much for him, let it blow like he did at the "hell no" wedding to Blair. You just know he's going to lose it. . . it's just a matter of when.

Not into a Luke/Anna romance. I wish Duke would come back for Anna, Laura for Luke and leave Robert & Holly together. GH heaven.

"But why does he want to flirt with Carly? Does he like her? Because that sucks. Blair's coming back to watch him hook up with Carly?"

Well, KdP apparently doesn't want to move to California full-time, which makes a Todd/Blair reunion problematic. I'm guessing that she's coming back just long enough to check up on Starr, trade barbs with her ex and possibly further the baby switch plot.

horselover, you and I have a pretty identical view of GH heaven!

As for Todd, showing off his physique to flirt or make a woman uncomfortable has just never been his M.O., and it's a reason I've liked him. He's just always been uncomfortable with that sort of thing (for VERY serious reasons), and has never been a typical soap hunk. Thank the lord. I just don't want it to change.

But I definitely want them to come up with other reasons to have Howarth shirtless!

Your information is off, Tim. KDP does want to come back full time. Badly. There was even a whole article about it a month ago in one of the soap magazines where she said they just hadn't asked her. They refuse to put her on contract.

I don't get it to be honest. They'll hire her on-screen daughter, her on-screen main partner, but not her. Just so he can flash his abs for Carly, of all people? Everyone knows GH only has a matter of months to live on. Why make Todd behave so out of character for that time?

It's honestly very frustrating.

I believe that she has also said she does not want to move to California while her son is in school in New York. I think that FV and RC would both like to see her on contract. So my information is the same as Tim's.

If Kassie DePaiva has ever gone on the record publicly that she would "definitely" or "definitely not" take a contract role and relocate for GH, I have certainly never seen it. She's very careful about her wording (which is savvy), generally, and has made it clear she'd love to be invited back (which she has been).

Can you not put posts about B&B and GH in the same post, please? I had to do alot of scrolling as I no longer watch B&B.
