Nominee for Worst Character in Daytime: Sonny Corinthos
So, you may have caught the occasional anti-Sonny reference around here, but on the advice of my team of personal physicians, therapists, and facialists, I try not to discuss him too often. My Soap Opera Rage, it rises, and it consumes everything in its path. I start to recall how General Hospital has stopped being about General Hospital and the people connected to it and has instead become the tale of the tiny mobster and his exploits, and I seethe. I remember when the Quartermaines and Spencers and Hardys and Scorpios were the central families of the show, then I compare it to now when Sonny and his various babymommas have replaced them, and I simmer. I think about how Sonny could actually be an interesting character, if only he weren't The Only Character and if he had some dimension, some evidence that he is morally conflicted about the fact that he commits crimes for a living, and I am incensed.
Okay, so I don't actually get that worked up over a soap character, but I do find him really annoying! He ruins the show for me on a regular basis - though thanks to the magic of TiVo's fast-forward feature, he does save me some time every week. Anyway, due to popular demand and my personal opinion, I give you our latest nominee for the worst character in daytime, Michael Corinthos Jr.
PROS:
+ truly cared for Stone and covered his medical expenses* (demerit: used illegal funds)
+ donated money to General Hospital (you know, that building in town where Sonny and Jason get their gunshot wounds treated?) for the Stone Cates Memorial AIDS Wing* (demerit: used illegal funds)
+ provided start-up funding for L&B Records, which created storylines I dug and gave Wally Kurth something to do* (demerit: used illegal funds)
+ had an interesting and compelling relationship with Brenda*
+ used to be pretty good-looking*
+ divorced Carly three times, thus at least temporarily interrupting the most dysfunctional relationship in daytime
+ fathered Christina, possibly the most adorable child on the planet
+ has superpower that enables him to travel from New York to a tropical Caribbean island in a matter of minutes
* note: occurred prior to the year 2000
CONS:
- in sum, is an unremitting asshole almost all the time
- is a mobster, yet is held up as the hero of the show
- shot his wife in the head while she was giving birth to his child
- routinely assaults innocent glass barware
- drugged Karen to get her to be a stripper (sub-entry: owned a strip club) (sub-sub-entry: employed underage girls at said strip club) (sub-sub-sub-entry: I think he also told Karen she was to blame for having been molested as a little girl; this would have had its own entry if I were sure he'd done it)
- has caused the deaths of, like, a metric buttload of people
- co-parents the creepiest child in daytime, Michael
- is a mobster, yet is held up as the hero of the show
- spends most of his time manipulating people
- hypocritically, routinely criticizes other people manipulating - pardon me, "munnipellating" - others
- has bizarre diction (e.g., "munnipellate" and "dee'-vorce")
- defiles tracksuits
- is on screen every damned day
- is a staggering narcicisist
- YELLS like it is going out of style
- had A.J. beaten up and hung from a meat hook (!) in order to steal custody of Micheal
- treats Ric like crap, even during those rare times when Ric does not deserve it
- has married Carly four times
- is smug as all hell
- shot Carly in the head while she was giving birth to his child
- has an unrivaled sense of entitlement
- inspires crazy fanbase
- uses way too much hair product (is this mafia-related? because see also Morgan, Jason)
- is on screen every damned day
- is a mobster, yet is held up as the hero of the show
- is in a pissy mood more often than Dick Cheney
- regularly puts his hands on his hips like a toddler
- recently tricked Carly into marrying him, even knowing she was in love with someone else
- had icky romantic relationship with much-younger woman he had known since she was a pre-teen, who is also the sister of his best friend/paid hitman (sub-entry: the much-younger woman also dated his stepson, and Sonny gave them a sex talk - ickiness amplified)
- employs a hitman
- put a hit out on the uber-hot Jagger
- shot his wife in the head while she was giving birth to his child
- has been arrested countless times (not unjustly)
- is on screen every damned day
- mumbles excessively
- held a gun to Faith's head and threatened to kill her while calling her a whore
- cheated on several of his conquests with other conquests
- ruined Jax's and Brenda's wedding (sub-entry: did so by bringing the immensely boring Miranda, Jax's not-dead wife, to town)
- got Carly pregnant while she was married to A.J.
- takes away valuable screentime that should rightly be given to Drs. Drake and Scorpio
- via DNA connection, foisted horrible Courtney on residents of Port Charles and viewing public
- shot his wife in the head while she was giving birth to his child
- is on screen every damned day
- is a mobster, yet is held up as the hero of the show
VERDICT: Why haven't any of the thousand people who have shot at him had better aim?!
- Evil But Twinless
It makes you sick when it's all written out like that. He's gross. I can't believe this whole show is about him.

"+ donated money to General Hospital (you know, that building in town where Sonny and Jason get their gunshot wounds treated?) for the Stone Cates Memorial AIDS Wing* (demerit: used illegal funds)+"
Actually, he the money he inherited from Lily's death--her father's estate to fund Stone's wing. You remember he decided to leave Lily, her dad decided to blow Sonny up, Sonny stayed with Lily when he found out she was pregnant, she was blown up in his place and her father had a heart attack when he found out that he had accidentally ordered the death of his daughter (he wasn't really dead, but that's another story) Lily's dead, Dad's dead, Sonny gets the estate, but Sonny, racked with guilt, decided he couldn't keep the money and donated it all to GH to build the wing to honor Stone and Lily. You can and should take a demerit from the wing donation because the dedication reads "From Mr. & Mrs. Michael Corinthos Jr." or something to that affect. IMHO, at Lily's name should have been listed. Hell, her name should have been there alone.

I had actually forgotten all about the money from Lily's dad. Was he a mobster too? Maybe we can still call the funds illegal.

Considering all the girls and women who, thanks to him and his drugs, likely graduated from stripping in his clubs to prostitution and a higher risk of HIV, I think helping to fund the Stone Cates Wing is the least the greasy midget could do.

Let's not forgot about how Sonny has never learned how to use a freaking condom. Knocking up Carly a couple of times.* Alexis unexpectedly had Kristina.* Plus there was Sam's baby.*
What a wonderful way for Sonny to show how much he learned from Stone's death from AIDS. By having unprotected sex. Which is exactly how Stone believed he contracted HIV. Lovely.
*If Sonny actually is Morgan, Kristina and dead baby Lila's father. I'm still firmly standing behind my belief that Jax is actually the tykes' father.
And yeah, I do recall Sonny telling poor Karen that her sexual abuse really was all her fault. And let's not forget that Sonny had the nerve to tell Scotty(years later and right after Karen's so call death) that Karen's rotten childhood was all his fault. Even though Sonny knew that Scotty didn't know about Karen until she was an adult.
Add in that Sonny was pissed at postshotinthehead!Carly because she had memory and brain damage. Damage that he had frakking caused!
God. I hate that sorry excuse of man.

his most recent suckiness -
robin is shot in the leg and the only life he tries to save in PC is carly's who is totally self-sufficient and not interested in being saved while sonny's vowed more times than i can count to take care of robin forever and ever!!! hate that bugger.
then there is the whole i'm a skeevy over-sexed old man who likes to decorate with all things black and skanky.
but the real reason i will vote for him every time? has to be the never proven dna relationship to courtney the-worst-character-ever matthews.

I want to print this out and frame it on my wall. It was awesome, Evil But Twinless. You rock!

The re-cast of Brenda Barrett is both uncalled for and completely unfounded. While I always enjoyed the Brenda and Robin banter, without Vanessa Marcil, no other actress will be able to pull it off. With what we've been handed lately in terms of storylines, we'll end up with another Carl AKA Jennifer Bransford in that the actress will be a rookie and incapable of filling such awesome shoes.
It's the way the show goes though: there are just certain actors that build their characters and, no matter who they are replaced with, will always be chosen no matter how long they were on-screen. Examples: Anthony Geary, Jonathan Jackson (while I love Greg, it has taken YEARS for me to be able to buy his role as Lucky Spencer), Rebecca Herbst, Stuart Damon (at least they killed him instead of bringing in some half-assed attempt at a replacement. That said, I'm outraged with his sudden firing and the complete dismissal of his interaction with the characters outside of Jason, his golden boy who happens to shoot people for sport), and Genie Francis (the remarkable Laura Spencer who was given a short opportunity to bring back life to the character she developed).

Back in the day, Sonny would have been a villain. His resume would make an Allan Spaulding or James Stenbeck blush. James Stenbeck has at least died numerous times and is not considered redeemable. Allan Spaulding is no one's hero or role model.

The one thing that REALLY bugs me is his perception of Brenda, he made it seems as if she ruined his life. yet Carly has done so much more than her and he forgives her and just remarries her. But he can't let go of an incident that happened over 13 years ago.

I don't see a problem with Sonny. Not to draw comparisons or anything, but Luke is a criminal too and is still held up as a hero.

The Worst Character in daytime? If you are talking GH then it has to be Jason Morgan. I find the fanbase that wants more Scrubs time "wacko." They have the same damn conversation every damn day.

Of course I read this entry and the comments after Jane Austen comments. If you're talking about Scrubs as in Robin and Ptrick as in my favorite couple on GH EVER like I think you are, thank you for calling me and my fellow Scrubs fan friends "wacko".

Yep, Sonny is a thug. I don't know what I despise more, the fact that he orders hits and we are supposed to root for him, or his fathering children like it is going out of style.

THIS HATING ON SONNY IS TIRESOME AND IRRITATING! There are worse characters who really are repulsive and cruel like Jerry Jax , Franco and Zacarra!
Posted by: Lee Trueblood | December 13, 2010 at 11:04 AM
He is the worst actor EVER!!! It is like he watched Christoper Walken movies over and over and over to learn acting technique. AND I HATE JASON!!!! He gave up his son so he could be Sonny's hit man? REPULSIVELY SELF CENTERED!!! I think they should just turn him gay he loves Sonny mre than anyone else on earth. Sonny always comes first for Jason, it makes me puke.

I totally agree with you! The GH used to be more fun and had more range, but now it's all about the Godfather and his minions. I also DVR through his parts so as to not get sick on his horrible acting. I hope the new head writer will bring back more diversity to the show and not make it all about the mob. I mean really, are we supposed to root for the Godfather? And how incompetent are the PCPD? Really? What a crock!

I hate the character Sonny so much. My hatred for him has killed any interest I have had in General Hospital. It's too mob focused and the misunderstood mobster routine is so played out. I'm retiring GH unless something changes.
